Gary here, welcome to week 2! Hope everyone and their little ones had a great week. 😃
🔬 MVP focal point
As with building any product, the more focused we are, the better the solution will be. So to start, the MVP will only focus on the first job-to-be-done below.
JTBD #1: Leave kids alone with videos and not worry about random content showing up
- Less than 5yrs old, parents search, gives device or control of TV to kid
- 5 - 12yrs old, kids search and have device
- What does the parent want: to get a break
- What does the kid want: entertainment
- MVP features required:
- Natural language filtering
- Profile-wide show/do-not-show settings
- Metric for success: [# of inappropriate videos in history tab] should be 0
JTBD #2: Kid is interested in a topic and want to deep dive

- What does the parent want: for the kid to learn something useful
- What does the kid want: exploration
- MVP features required:
- Natural language filtering
- Metric for success: [Progress made on topic/time]
📱 Product
Finished the wireframes for the general flow of the app, let me know what you think!
Got the core filtering logic working on the backend. Feel free to try it out!
- Open up a terminal on your laptop
- Copy and paste this into your terminal and press enter:
time curl https://api.paladinkids.com/api/v1/videos/search -X POST -H "content-type: application/json" -d '{"q": "counting math videos for kids explained using trains"}'
- Note that "age" is currently hardcoded to 4yrs old
- The query string after "q" is what you enter into the search box, and the server responds with the first 25 search results. Each search result includes id and snippet from Youtube, and our GPT-powered filter_result
🔮 Social

🙏 Ask: looking for referrals
If you have any family, friends, or colleagues that are also parents with young children, I'd love to get in contact with them. Feel free to directly connect us over email at gary@paladinkids.com. If it helps, here's a blurb you can forward:
Hey there, I'm Gary Lin, a startup founder from Toronto. My wife and I have a 5 month old baby girl, and while chatting with fellow parents, we keep hearing the same stories about how bad Youtube is for their kids. Parents put on something educational, then suddenly the kid's watching an inappropriate video from an unknown channel. Given how common this problem is, I've decided to build a Youtube app designed for parents to easily curate educational videos while filtering out unwanted content. If this applies to you, I'd love to hear your experiences: https://cal.com/gary-j-lin/paladin-kids-research.
Let me know any comments, feedback, or ideas by sending an email to gary@paladinkids.com!
Thanks,
Gary Lin
